What Is an Air Cleaner?

Because of the number of products on the market, many people wonder what the difference is between an air cleaner and an air purifier. Typically, there is no major difference between the two and the terms are interchangeable. However, an air cleaner generally uses mechanical means to filter your home while an air purifier uses electronic means. There are some air cleaners that use both.

A HEPA filter removes 99.97% of particles that are 0.3 microns or larger in diameter. This effectively removes almost all allergens, including pet dander, pollen, dust, and mold spores. Other filters, including the standard filter that’s included with your home air handler, remove about the same amount of contaminants but not quite as many, nor as efficiently.

An electronic air purifier is connected to the heating and air conditioning system in your house, which cycles through all of the air in your home whenever you run your unit. In the process, the cleaner pulls dust and other contaminants out of the air, leaving it fresher and cleaner while helping your household feel healthier.

Choosing & Installing a New Air Cleaner for Your Home

The efficiency level, type, and brand of air cleaner you have installed in your home will depend on a number of factors. First, think about what contaminants are in your home and how they affect the general health of the family members in the house. If you have high levels of certain contaminants or if members of your family suffer from allergies or asthma, you will want a very high–efficiency air cleaner.

Another thing to consider is that air cleaners, even the highest efficiency models, don’t remove some of the smallest particles in the air, including exhaust fumes, smoke, and certain gases. You may need to have an air purifier, or a combination air cleaner/purifier, to remove those particles.

Additionally, extremely high-efficiency air cleaners sometimes have a negative impact on the airflow of your home’s heating and air conditioning system. While newer systems are rarely affected by this, it’s important to discuss your options with a technician before choosing a model that may affect airflow.
