How Can I Improve the Air Quality in My Home?

Are you tired of experiencing allergy-like symptoms in your home? No one should have to experience coughing, sneezing, or respiratory discomfort because the quality of the air in their house is poor. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to improve the air quality in your home, helping you to breathe easier. Read on to see what tips our experts at Premier Indoor Comfort Systems have for improving indoor air quality (IAQ).

Replace Your AC Filter

Air conditioning filters work to remove common air pollutants from the air before recirculating it into your home. Common pollutants that filters trap include dust, pollen, animal fur, hair, mold, bacteria, and other particulates. Because all of the air that heats and cools your home runs through your filter, eventually, its going to become too dirty to function properly. You should check your filter regularly and replace it when it is so dirty that you cannot see through it when it is held up to a light source.

Check Other Filters in Your Home

In addition to your AC filter, you should regularly check and clean other filters in your home. Your vacuum filter, dryer filter, and kitchen vents can all be dirtied by air pollutants. Check and clean these filters regularly to ensure they are able to function properly.

Avoid Having Indoor Plants

Contrary to popular belief, there is actually no evidence that demonstrates having indoor plants significantly improves indoor quality. In fact, having plants in your home can actually reduce your air quality as overwatered plants can develop mold and other allergens.

Keep Your Home Clean

Keeping your home clean is a great way to improve the air quality in your home. Regularly washing your bedding; vacuuming carpets, rugs, walls, and furniture; mopping floors; and clearing clutter are all ways that you can improve your IAQ. Cleaning helps to remove allergens and debris such as pollen, pet fur, bacteria, dust, and more.

Let Fresh Air In

It is always a good idea to open your windows and let some fresh air into your home at least once a day. By bringing fresh air in, you can push out stale, unhealthy air. If you live close to an area with heavy traffic, we recommend opening your windows in the morning or in the evening, when traffic is lighter.
