In order to keep your HVAC system working as efficiently and effectively as it should, you need to schedule professional maintenance. It’s during your preventive maintenance appointment that our HVAC staff will fully inspect and clean your system, all while checking for any pressing repair or service needs.
This is typically a yearly appointment—recommended bi-annually if you have a heat pump system. That being said, there is one maintenance task that you can, and should, do on your own as it is required much more often than once or twice a year. That task is changing or cleaning your air filter. But exactly how often should it be done? The short answer is, it depends. Keep reading to learn more.
Permanent Filters
We actually do not recommend this type of air filter. The reason being, it is especially susceptible to mold and mildew as it obtains moisture from the air as well as moisture from being cleaned. However, if you do have a permanent filter then we recommend removing and cleaning it using a low-pressure garden hose about every 2 months. Just be sure to dry it thoroughly before putting it back in your system?
Panel Filters
Panel filters are the most common—and least expensive—the type of air filters. They can typically be bought in packs at any hardware store and work for a wide variety of HVAC systems. They do need frequent changing—typically once a month—as they have less powerful filtration levels than more expensive air filters. Which brings us to…
Pleated Filters
Pleated filters are the more expensive type of air filter. They’re made of polyester, versus the fiberglass that panel filters are made from. They are also much more powerful at filtration. One thing you’ll want to watch for is whether or not your air filters are too powerful. Anything with a MERV rating above 10 can restrict airflow, which of course is not good for your comfort or for your HVAC system.
